The Ultimate Guide to Making Lash Extensions Last Longer
The most common question lash artists are asked is, “How long do eyelash extensions last?” The answer: it depends. Lash longevity varies depending on factors like your natural lash cycle, the type of extensions and how they were applied, and finally, the aftercare.
How well you take care of your lashes greatly impacts how long they’ll last. And the truth is, lash extensions need a lot of TLC! If you want to get the most miles from your lashes, taking care of them is a must-do.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned veteran looking for better retention, this list of lash extension do’s and don’ts is bound to get you extra wear time. Here is our guide to making lash extensions last longer:
1) Resist the temptation to pull or pick
Let’s be honest; we know how satisfying it can feel to scratch an itchy lash line. But if you want your lash extensions to last longer, try your best to avoid picking at them and rubbing your eyes! Pulling at them breaks down the adhesive and can make your natural lashes shed quicker. The key to long-lasting extensions is being extra gentle with the eye area.
2) Stay away from oily products
Oil is the #1 enemy to lash extensions. It loosens the adhesive making the extensions slip off like butter. Because of this, it’s important all of your face products are water-based. That means avoiding water-proof makeup at all costs. We recommended avoiding mascara and eyeliner in general, but if you are having a hard time giving them up (we understand!) then opt for lash extension-approved products.
3) Sleep on your back
If you’re a stomach sleeper, you’re not going to like this next tip: don’t sleep face down. To keep your eyelashes in perfect shape, you’ll want to avoid anything that can move or smush them. We know this is easier said than done, so to be extra safe, invest in a high-quality silk pillowcase.
Silk pillowcases are more gentle on hair follicles, and the frictionless surface helps decrease tugging. That means if you do end up on your face in the middle of the night, the silk pillowcase will be less likely to pull at your extensions. Your hair and eyelashes will thank you!
4) Wash your lashes
Now, this may seem counterintuitive since we recommend keeping your lashes dry, but you should be washing your lashes once a day. Doing so helps remove excess oil and dirt that can break down the glue. Additionally, washing and brushing your lashes keep them looking brand new.
To clean your lash extensions, use a lash cleanser (like our foaming Rub-A-Dub cleanser!) with a fluffy brush. Pump a small amount of the cleanser onto the wet brush and use small circular motions to gently wash the lashes. Rinse with water. Once you’re done cleaning, wait until they are dry and brush them out. Use a spoolie to fluff and shape your lashes to perfection.
Be careful not to overwash or overbrush. Once a day max!
5) Stay away from heat
While it may be tempting to sit in the bathroom after a steamy, hot shower – for the sake of your lashes, don’t do it. Steam and heat will weaken the bond on your extensions making them shed faster. We recommend avoiding the sauna and high heat whenever possible.
If you’re extra like us, use a blower dryer on cool after you shower to protect your lashes to the fullest. We know this may sound excessive, but if you’re paying hard-earned money, you want to keep your lashes at their best!
6) Consider lighter lashes
While thick, mega-long lashes are a beautiful statement – they don’t last as long as their light, fluttery counterparts. Lighter lashes have a longer shelf life because they carry less weight. If you can’t give up the long lashes, we don’t blame you! Ask your lash artist about using thinner diameter lashes or creating a “hybrid” set.
7) Avoid thick skincare around the eye area
Be mindful when applying your skincare routine. The oils in rich, creamy skincare products can break down the glue. Steer clear from using thick eye creams that could jeopardize your lashes and try lightweight eye serums instead.
8) No mechanical eyelash curlers
Mechanical eyelash curlers are a no-go for any lash extension wearer. This is because curling them can damage the extensions and your natural lashes. Lash extensions already come with a preset curl, but if you are unhappy with the curl type, be sure to mention this to your lash artist.
9) Avoid water in the first 24-48 hours
So, you may have heard this tip about eyelash extensions and we wanted to address it! Back in the day, lash artists told clients to avoid getting their lashes wet 24 to 48 hours after their appointments. This was to avoid disrupting the glue during its curing process. Nowadays, lash artists can use products like the nebulizer to cure the glue immediately, meaning if used, you can get your lashes wet 4 to 6 hours after your appointment. No more awkward showers or worrying about getting your lashes wet!
10) Use a sealer
Sealer is a lash extension savior. You’re likely already familiar with sealer since it’s used at the end of service to coat the adhesive. Sealer helps protect the bond from oils and moisture, and it can also be used to extend the life of lash extensions.
To use sealer, apply a small amount to a disposable wand and brush through the lashes. Be careful to only use a minimal amount, as it can make the extensions stick together if there’s too much.
11) Don’t miss your refills
At the end of the day, no matter how careful you are with your lash extensions, they will fall out eventually due to the natural lash cycle. To keep them looking their fullest, be sure to get fills done every 2 to 3 weeks. And if all this sounds a little much, strip lashes may be an alternative that can give you your desired results without the extra aftercare!
