Strip Lashes 101: How to Apply False Lashes Like a Pro
I might be biased toward eyelash extensions, but that doesn’t mean strip lashes aren’t near and dear to my heart.
Strip lashes were the unsung heroes before the rise in popularity of lash extensions in the early 2000s, and today, they’re still widely used by lash enthusiasts.
Heck, they might even be more trendy than lash extensions right now. Look anywhere, and you’ll find an endless mirage of strip lashes, from aisles upon aisles in the drugstore to a never-ending supply of Instagram posts of women rocking their favorite pair.
Needless to say, strip lashes aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. But despite their widespread availability and trendiness, strip lashes remain the most intimidating part of many women’s beauty routines.
If that sounds like you, we’re here to help! In this post, we’ll cover the types of false lashes and give our best tips so you can wear them like a pro.
What are the types of false lashes?
Before your purchase your first pair of lashes, it’s important to know the different options to choose from:
Strip: Strip lashes are the most common false lash, and they are the most intuitive. Similarly, they offer the most variety when it comes to shape, length, and volume. Strip lashes are most commonly sold with either a clear or black band.
Individuals: While strip lashes are the most beginner-friendly, individual or cluster lashes require the most skill to apply. These lashes come in small groups with boxy bases (similar to premade volume fans) and are applied one by one to the lash line. Though it requires more time and effort, individual lashes can create a more natural effect and allow for better customization to your eye shape.
Magnetic: Magnetic lashes are a fairly new innovation but have rapidly grown in popularity over the past few years. These lashes come with tiny magnets attached to the base of the lash and on average, can be used more times than a normal strip lash due to no adhesive buildup. Today, there is also magnetic eyeliner that can be used in combination with the lashes for a seamless application.
How do I know which strip lashes will look good on me?
With thousands of options to choose from, finding the right strip lash for you can feel like a scavenger hunt. If you’re struggling to find the perfect pair, try these tips:
- Consider what you’re trying to achieve: Different lash styles will create different effects on the eyes. For instance, some pairs may make the eyes look larger or rounder, while others elongate and give a lifted result. It’ll be easier to narrow down your choices if you know the type of looking you’re trying to achieve.
- Take into account makeup: Do you plan on wearing makeup with the lashes? If not, consider sticking with clear-band strip lashes, so they blend in easier with the lash line.
- Search hashtags and read reviews: Thanks to social platforms like Instagram and Facebook, there are hundreds of review photos of how certain lashes look on the eyes! What the pair looks like in the box isn’t always a good indicator of what they’ll look like on the eyes. Search for brand images or review photos to get a better idea!
How do I apply strip lashes?
Ready to apply your false lashes like a pro? Follow these steps to get just the right application:
1) Prep
This step is optional, but it’s best to curl your lashes and use mascara before applying strip lashes. Doing this step beforehand will not only allow the lashes to blend better, but it will reduce the amount of mascara on the strip lashes, meaning they’ll be easier to clean and reuse for next time.
2) Remove them from the box
Now is not the time to rush! Strip lashes are delicate and if you rip them out of the box, they can tear, and the $10-20 you spent is down the drain. Take your time while doing this step, and gently remove the lashes by the base using your thumb and a downward motion.
3) Measure & cut
Lashes aren’t one-size-fits-all, and the majority of the time they will need to be cut to fit your eye shape. Once you have the lashes out of the box, before putting adhesive on them, gently place the lashes against your lash line to see where you’ll need to cut. You want to start at a comfortable place on the inner corner and cut the excess hanging out of the outer corner.
4) Add adhesive
Use a thin layer of lash adhesive on the entire band, paying extra attention to the inner and outer corners of the lash, which are most prone to lift. Wait about 45 seconds for the glue to get tacky, and get ready to apply!
5) Attach to lash line
Looking down in a mirror to expose your lash line, use a lash applicator and pick up the strip lash by the middle of the lash. Place it as close as possible to your natural lash line. Once it’s set in the right place, take the inner and outer corners and attach them to fit the curve of your eye. Wait for the adhesive to dry, and voila!
Strip Lash FAQs
Can you sleep in false lashes?
It is not recommended to sleep with your false lashes on. Doing so can increase the risk of natural lash loss and eye infection.
Can I use professional lash adhesive on strip lashes?
No! Please do not use professional lash adhesive to apply strip lashes. This can cause serious damage to the eye, including blindness if the glue gets in your eye. Professional lash adhesive is designed to last for 6-8 weeks and requires a professional to apply. It is not worth risking your health and sight.
Can strip lashes ruin your natural lashes?
No, strip lashes won't damage your natural eyelashes if applied and removed correctly. Never rip the strip lash off to remove it. Instead, use an oil-based cleanser and gently massage until the adhesive dissolves.
Can you reuse strip lashes?
Yes! Most strip lashes can be used a dozen times before needing to be thrown out. The better care you take of them, the more uses you’ll get out of them.
