How to Choose the Right Lash Artist

Lash extensions are an investment. And like any other project you’re willing to dish out cash for, it’s important to do the proper research!

Unlike restaurants or bars, there isn’t a comprehensive directory for lash artists. Of course, you can still search for lash extensions on Yelp, but the selection is limited to salons (which aren’t specific to artists.)

Since most lash artists work independently from rented studio spaces, it can be tricky to find the right ones. Fortunately, with the power of social media, there are plenty of ways to browse the artists in your area.

If you’re new to lashing or moved to a new city and are in search of your new go-to tech, here are our tips for choosing the right lash artist:

1) Find your style

Lashes come in all shapes and sizes. Are you looking for a “my lashes but better” look or something more bold? Do you prefer something foxy and lifting or rounded and doll-like? Which is more important: length or volume?

Narrowing down your preferences is the first step to finding your perfect lash tech. Not all artists specialize in certain styles, nor will they all have the same techniques and skills. If you’re a mega-volume lover, you’ll want an artist just as passionate about thick lash lines as you are! Here are some questions that can help fine-tune your preferences:

  • Are you looking for something natural or glam?
  • Do you prefer length, volume, or both?
  • Do you want your eyes to appear more round or more cat-like?

P.S. If you’re unsure of how to answer the questions above, don’t worry. Skip to the next tip and browse away until something catches your eye. From there, you can start to learn more about what you do and don’t like. You can also ask potential artists what they think is most suitable for your lashes and eye shape.

2) Scroll local hashtags

Social media can be a godsend for finding independent artists. Major cities all have lash-specific tags that can help you locate lash techs in your area. If you’re from Las Vegas like me, scroll through tags like #vegaslashes on Instagram, which has over 160k posts. The same applies to Facebook, which is also a great way to see client testimonials if they have a business page. Many artists are even using Tik Tok, which can give you a behind-the-scenes look into their techniques and personality. (Shameless plug to the Lash Reality TikTok.)

3) Make sure they’re licensed

I cannot stress this enough – make sure you go to a professional! Your lash artist should be licensed from an accredited institution. This license means they have a basic knowledge of sanitary practices and proper application techniques. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many stories on women who go to unlicensed artists and leave with poorly applied sets that damage their natural lashes. Not only will this end up costing more money in the long run (for removal and reapplication by a trained professional), but it’s also incredibly dangerous! Don’t risk your lash health, and if it means spending a little extra cash, I promise it’s worth every penny!

4) Prioritize experience

Let me clarify; There’s nothing wrong with going to an artist who is just beginning their lash career. All the successful artists once started as newbies too. However, in general, longer practicing artists have better knowledge and application skills. If you want the best-looking lashes that will last the longest, go to an established tech. You may be able to save some cash by going to lesser experienced artists but be prepared that it may take them longer to complete the set, or the lashes may not retain as well.

5) Ask lots of questions

Don’t be afraid to do a lash consultation with an artist before committing to a full set. Most lash professionals offer these services and are happy to answer any questions. At the end of the day, we want you to feel confident with your lashes, so ask away!

Visiting their studio beforehand also lets you check out how they maintain their space. If it’s clean, comfortable, and inviting, you’re in good hands! On the other hand, if you notice anything that doesn’t pass sanitary guidelines, such as reusing disposable items or lashes left out of their containers – RUN, don’t walk!

Here are some questions that are useful to ask your lash artist:

  • How long have you been certified?
    Where did you receive training?
  • What type of lash products do you use?
  • What aftercare do you advise?

Asking these questions helps you understand how the artist conducts their business, and all help determine whether they’re a good fit for you.

6) Read testimonials

If possible, try to find client reviews. Most independent artists have an online presence, whether that be through social media or an online portfolio. If they have a business Facebook page, you can easily find reviews and before and after photos.

Similarly, one of the best ways to find a good lash tech is through word of mouth. If you see someone in public with gorgeous lashes, ask who they go to! It’s a great way to see firsthand how the artist’s work looks and it spreads some positivity – which we could all use a little more of. :)

7) Use your intuition

When in doubt, trust your gut! If something feels off, listen to that little voice inside your head. It’s amazing how often it is usually right. There are hundreds of lash artists in every city, so this is your time to be picky about who works on your delicate lashes. After all, if you’re going to have someone 5 inches from your face for a few hours each month, it’s important that you’re comfortable with them!
